Touch by Jus Accardo—Author Interview+Review

MEET THE AUTHOR:
Jus Accardo is the author of YA paranormal romance and urban fantasy fiction. A native New Yorker, she lives in the middle of nowhere with her husband, three dogs, and sometimes guard bear, Oswald. Her first book, Touch, is out November 2011 from Entangled Publishing. She is represented by Kevan Lyon of Marsal Lyon Literary Agency.

Interview:
I had the pleasure to be able to interview Jus Accardo and ask her a bit about her Debut Novel TOUCH.

Edmiary:
Okay! Here we go! First of all, thank you and welcome!

Jus:
Thanks for inviting me ! :)

Edmiary:
Kale is unable touch other people. Everything he touches dies. Why touch? What gave you the idea to come up with such a dangerous and interesting gift?

Jus:
The whole thing started with a simple flash of a scene. I got this picture in my head of a barefoot girl running through the woods. The ground beneath her withered and died. It all grew from there.

Edmiary:
If you'd found yourself in the same situation as Dez, at the woods after the party, would you have done the same? Would you have aided the strange boy? Why?

Jus:
Hmm... Not sure. Is he as cute as Kale? ;)

Edmiary:
If you could travel back, what time would you go back to and why?

Jus:
This is kind of a loaded question. There are several points I'd like to revisit... But I'd be tempted to change certain things--and if I did that, I wouldn't be the person I am today. I'd probably pass on it all together...

Edmiary:
What's your favorite part about writing?

Jus:
I get to make stuff up for a living!

Edmiary:
Again, thanks so much! It's been a pleasure having you :)

Jus:
This has been a blast! Thanks for letting me hang :)

This has been a year full of great debuts and let me tell you that this one has definitely not been a disappointment. This novel from the very beginning promised to be great. A hot guy in the middle of the woods, totally lost and scared? I HAD to know what happened.
Dez is the only one who can touch Kale without him killing her and that makes everyone wonder and ponder.
Kale has definitely won a spot in my heart and very rapidly crawled his way up to the top 5 of my favorite male characters ever. I am in love. He has this sort of sweet innocence that blew me away, and those blue eyes? To die for!
Dez is also a character I really liked because she's very much in charge of her image and she's strong and has a clear mind of how she wants things to be done. She knows how to use things to her advantage and she doesn't let anyone mess around with her.
Accardo has a way of writing things that I really like. They're witty, funny and fresh.
This novel will wrap you up in suspense and leave space for a promising sequel to come. A fantastic read.

Happy Gobble Gobble Turkey Day!

Alright. So this is me saying Happy Thanksgiving in advance because you won't be seeing much of me online for the next few days. More specifically until next Monday. But just because I won't be online it doesn't mean I won't do any reading! So once I come back I have a few interesting reviews for you guys.

This week I'm also going to be working hard on meeting my goal on NaNo of 50,000 words. I am weeping because I'm a bit behind so I shall bleed over my keyboard because I must reach that goal!
Another thing! Remember to take this time to spend it with your loved ones and eats lots of turkey and give thanks to God, mom, dad, the trees and everything that you have. This is the perfect time of year to Eat, Pray, Love ;)

HAVE A GOOD ONE!

Bloodlines by Richelle Mead

Release Date: August 2011
Publisher: Razorbill
Age Group: 12 and Up
Pages: 432
Format: Hardcover
Source: Bookstore
Buy the Book: Amazon

Bloodlines is the widely-awaited series by the fantastic person to create Vampire Academy and swoon-worthy Dimitri Belikov (whom I miss terribly I can assure you). In this new series the story picks up right after the incidents in Last Sacrifice, so rest assured all you Mead fans we are once again sucked into the amazing world of Moroi. BUT! In this new series the narrator is Sydney Sage, the alchemist who made her first appearance in Blood Promise.
In this story we follow Sydney as she goes to California on an alchemist assignment. Her job is to give protection to Jill Mastrano, sister to the Moroi Queen Vasilisa Dragomir. Jill is under threat of an attack and is posing as Sydney's sister in a human boarding school in Palm Springs. Eddie Castille and Adrian Ivashkov join them; Eddie as Jill's dhampir bodyguard and Adrian as... no one's really sure why Adrian is there.
The Moroi Court believe that Jill and Sydney will be safe at Amberwood Prep, but threats, distractions and forbidden romance lurk and the drama is just beginning.
I really liked this novel because a) I loved Vampire Academy and was sad to see it end, b) In Vampire Academy I was super conflicted between Adrian and Dimitri, and even though I was so glad that Rose stayed with Dimitri, I was super heartbroken to see Adrian have such a sad ending.
I was a bit skeptical over Bloodlines at first, because I loved Rose and had my doubts on having the perspective from another character. So, I was actually pleasantly surprised to like Sydney as the narrator. There is a lot we didn't get to see in VA. She's smart and strong and even though I loved Rose's impulsiveness I liked seeing how she thought everything through.
Adrian is definitely a strangely alluring character for me. In VA I never thought I'd ever like him, not only because he was a bit unstable, but because he jumped from girl to girl and party to party constantly. When I was starting to think he was hopeless, Mead gave him a new twist. He changed for love and tried very hard to be a better person. What I love most about him is that he is a great person and human being but he just doesn't realize it and thinks he's worthless and that he can't do anything, well, worthy. He doesn't realize he could do so much more. And, I don't want to give too much away, but I can tell you that I loved the relationship that Sydney and him developed and how she made him see himself from another perspective.
I loved it. It was good, entertaining, it had drama, suspense and mystery. The characters were fun and most of all I was just glad to see Adrian back and hopefully in this series he actually will get his happy ending. We'll just have to wait and see. I, for one, am counting the days for The Golden Lily!

Random Splurge!

Hey! I really wanted to share something with you guys but it is nothing related with what the blog is about which is, well, books. So, I had this idea to create a post where I can post whatever I want and call it Random Splurge! and here it is! I even created a cool pic for it! Anyway! So what i wanted to share with you guys was...

Lately, I've been really hooked on Fall Out Boy (which is a shame I didn't give them a chance sooner since they're on an indefinite hiatus). And I like quite a lot of songs of theirs but my latest leave-on-repeat-for-days song is Dance, Dance. I was a little curious about the lyrics and I understood the meaning behind them but a few sentences were still a mystery to me. I Googled them and found this interpretation online that I simply loved and wanted you guys to read.

Dance, Dance by Fall Out Boy
Interpretation
November 2005
Anonymous

I think you're all right to a degree, but here's my take on it:
The title "Dance, Dance" itself is referring to the "game", or in this case, Dance of relationships/life
In the first verse, "She says she's no good with words but I'm worse" is her attempting to put the blamefor her breaking up with him on him. She doesn't really know what to say, but to her, it's clearly his fault. Not to him. The "joke of a romantic" is him vainly attempting her to win her back, but he's "Weighed down with words over-dramatic," meaning there's so much he wants to tell her, but he just can't get it out. After they talk, "Tonight it's 'it can't get much worse' Vs. 'no one should ever feel like..' " is him relating his now current situation to old clichés. "I'm two quarters and a heart down" means they broke up over the phone (gay). After the breakup, he immediately starts to cling to his memories of them together, not wanting to forget how her voice sounds, etc. He then turns inward, saying "These words are all I have so I'll write them," which is his plan for his final attempt to bring closure to his situation... which sets up for the chorus.
In the chorus, he's saying that during the game of life, we're falling apart half the time, it's just how we pick ourselves back up again that makes us who we are. We see all the happy people everywhere in TV, etc., and those are the lives we want to lead. However, he knows that it's never going to be that simple, and he just wants her to be happy. He loved her the only way that he knew how; with everything he had. She, however, decided to move on, and he wishes the best for her, comparing that the way she feels with the other guy as the complete polar opposite of how miserable he feels.
Second verse is actually part of their conversation on the phone. This is him calling her out because she has a knack for folding under pressure, or when someone sees her for who she really is (which is exactly who she DOESN'T want them to see, since she in fact hates herself and is insecure). So, "Drink up its last call, Last resort, But only the first make mistake and I..." Is him taking a stand and forcing her to make the next move. He's seen through her crap, and her excuses and pathetic attempts at rectifying her actions.
The third and shortest verse is him telling her to "man up" and show some backbone, because he knows exactly why she wants to break up with him... She's been cheating (or at least thinking about it... 'saving' could mean both in the sense that she doesn't do anything for HIM because she's either ALREADY doing it with the other guy, or she's ABOUT to). Regardless, he already knows... which is kinda his fault for not saying anything earlier, since now she's breaking up with him, when he had the perfect reason to do it earlier to her, but my guess is he just loved her too much.
The final blurb in the finale "I only want sympathy in the form of you crawling into bed with me," is saying that he only wants her if she can realize just how much he loved her, and return to her "rightful place"... or he just wants a last "good-bye screw," hahahaha.
Finally, the song fades out with the title "Dance, Dance," signifying that regardless of what happens with them the game of life goes on and on.

...but that's just what I think.

Beautiful Disaster by Jamie McGuire

Release Date: May 2011
Publisher: Jamie McGuire
Age Group: Mature Readers (some explicit context)
Format: Kindle
Source: Friend
Buy the Book: Amazon

I was first attracted to this book because of it's cover. It called to me and it made me curious. When I read the synopsis I had to read it. I don't know why. There was something about the plot that genuinely captured my attention.
In this book, Travis Maddox is your regular bad boy, screw-every-girl-in-my-line-of-vision, street boxer type, so naturally I wasn't fond of him to begin with. Abby is your good runaway girl. She's doesn't swear and doesn't drink. She's also trying to get away from her dark past.
When this unlikely pair meet at one of Travis's famous fights everyone is surprised at their quickly growing friendship. And not only that but the fact that Travis "Mad Dog" Maddox hasn't tried getting her into bed getting some serious head turns. Travis and Abby make a bet where if she loses she has to stay at his apartment for a whole month and if he loses then he has to clean up his act. Sadly, she loses and the fun really begins when Abby is forced to stay in Travis's apartment. As time passes, Travis realizes that Abby just may be the one for him, the problem is she just doesn't want him. How is it that the only girl that Travis wants seriously won't have him?
I'm not even sure why I liked Travis, but I did. He's obsessive, self-destructing, and a bit imposing. Yet, there was something inexplicably good about him. Sure, he was a complete jackass a lot of the times but when it really got down to it he was good and cared about Abby. He changed his ways for her and simply loved her.
Abby on the other hand, infuriated me a bit because I felt like she was just set on making Travis's life harder. She knew perfectly well that he was crazy about her and she went about making more complicated on him. Yes, she had her own monsters to fight but, in my opinion, she shouldn't have made a decision for him concerning each other and her little "problem".
I can promise you that this book didn't let me down. I loved it! It actually went above my expectations, which is saying a lot since they were already pretty high. The book was amazing and I loved how McGuire made those intense scenes work.

Silence (Hush, Hush #3) by Becca Fitzpatrick

Release Date: October 2011
Publisher: Simon and Schuster Books for Young Readers
Age Group: Young Adult
Pages: 448
Format: Hardcover
Source: Bookstore
Buy the Book: Amazon

This book. What can I say?... WOW. In one word that about sums it up, but since I've never been the quite type I'll extend my answer.
First of all, I had no idea what to expect in this book because Crescendo left me completely in the dark about what would happen. In the end of book #2, Patch had finally told Nora he loved her and I couldn't have been happier. I even did a mental happy dance—since I didn't want to stop reading and do an actual one—when it finally happened. The my rocket crashed on solid concrete not even two pages later when douchebag, I mean Hank, appeared in Patch's apartment and seized them. I knew it was over but I still flipped the page in the hopes of a very unlikely miracle. After that I was dying for Silence to be released. I refused to read the synopsis to the upcoming book because that would simply make me antsy and the book wasn't coming out in forever! So when the book was already being shipped over, I went on Becca's blog and read the first chapter. I was so confused. So, I went ahead and read the synopsis. When I read that Nora could be falling in love again the first word that popped to mind was "Hell?" then, "Traitor!". The damn books wouldn't get here fast enough! When they finally arrived and i got to read my precious copy I all but died.
Becca has such a knack for keeping you intrigued, confused and happy all rolled into one. Not an easy feat. It turns out that Nora's memory has been wiped clean and she doesn't remember Patch, at all. Tragic, I know. She's also been missing for three months and she can't remember a single thing. But there's a funny feeling she has sometimes like something vital is missing but she just can't quite put her finger on it. During this crazy unknowing state, Nora is determined to regain the knowledge of the lost memories for the last 5 months of her life and she runs into a strange, dark and beautiful boy named Jev—(I know, right?! Who knew! I almost died and was so relived!)—who knows about her hazy past. I actually liked Nora in this book, unlike the second one where I was a bit irritated with her. I miss snarky and sarcastic Patch, a lot, but I can't say I dislike this new supportive one. I did not however appreciate how little affection she showed towards Patch in this book while he was wearing his heart out on his sleeve the whole time. I felt that she was... detached? Cautious? I'm not sure. But that's just me. Maybe there's nothing wrong and I'm just miffed because I wanted more Patch.
As they stand in the middle, on the brink of a war between fallen angels and nephilim, Patch and Nora try to salvage their romance and trust in each other.

NaNoWriMo

One month. 50,000 words. An adventure you'll never forget. Are you writing a novel this November?

National Novel Writing Month is a fun, seat-of-your-pants approach to novel writing. Participants begin writing on November 1. The goal is to write a 50,000 word, (approximately 175 page) novel by 11:59:59, November 30.

This is my first year doing NaNoWriMo so I'm super excited! I already started my novel and am proud to say I have a little over 4,000 words already. It's going to be super tough but I hope to able to reach the goal by the end of the month. This means little sleep, lots of work and loads of coffee! It's called Story of My Life, but the title is subject to change. If you'd like to read the excerpt click the link below.

I Shall Promise No More

Hey guys, so I am very aware that lately I am always promising this review and that review and I keep postponing and I just HATE IT. So, I have come to the conclusion that i hate book schedules. Not only do i hate them, i cannot do them. I can't just say, "Oh, today I'll read blah book and tomorrow review it so on Wednesday I can read blah book." NOT HAPPENING FOR ME!
So, I have come to apologize for not doing this sooner. I also want to tell you guys that from now on I'll review the books I can and feel like, because some books I just don't get the "review vibe". I don't know if you get what I mean, but it's the best I can do to explain.
I won't be reviewing Supernaturally by Kirsten White because, honestly, I haven'y even finished it. I didn't get into it.
Will Grayson, Will Grayson was good—up to where I read. The problem was I got confused and had to start over again. I loathe reading on eBook formats so I do it as minimum as possible. This book, unfortunately was an eBook, so to re-read everything all over again from an eReader? No thank you. So once I purchase a hardback I will finish it.
The Luxe I simply have read like 10 pages and it's not enough to capture me into the book and I have other books in my TRPile that call to me more than this one.
The Witch of Blackbird Pond I haven't even gotten around to skimming the first page because the cover is just so absolutely boring that I can't bring myself to even pick it up. But someday I will.

My next post will be November releases.
